World Hand Hygiene Day 2026: Clean Hands, Safer Care at ISTH

Every year on 5th May, the global health community marks World Hand Hygiene Day, a key initiative led by the World Health Organization to advance infection prevention and patient safety. The 2026 theme, “Action Saves Lives – Clean Your Hands,” is a reminder that consistent hand hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to prevent infections in healthcare settings.

At Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), the importance of hand hygiene cannot be overstated. As a referral centre managing infectious diseases, including Lassa fever, ISTH operates in a high-risk environment where strict infection prevention and control are essential. Clean hands are therefore a frontline defence against disease transmission.

Hand hygiene is one of the simplest, most cost-effective, and most impactful tools for delivering safe and high-quality care. It protects patients, safeguards staff, and supports overall healthcare quality. The campaign also reminds healthcare workers to practise hand hygiene at the right time and with the correct technique, guided by the WHO 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene.

Even in resource-constrained settings, deliberate actions save lives. The use of alcohol-based hand sanitiser when soap and water are unavailable, prioritising hand hygiene during critical moments of care, and promptly reporting non-functional handwashing facilities all contribute to better protection.

As ISTH commemorates World Hand Hygiene Day 2026, staff, patients, and visitors are encouraged to embrace a culture of safety, because every hand cleaned is a life protected.
