Anaesthesia Department

The Anaesthesia Department provides perioperative anaesthetic care, critical care support, pain management, and training for medical personnel. Services are delivered by consultant physician anaesthetists and trained nurse anaesthetists, with full recovery and ICU support.

Range of Services

1. Physician Anaesthetists

  • Labour analgesia
  • Regional anaesthesia (spinal, combined spinal-epidural, peripheral nerve blocks)
  • General anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgeries (across specialties)
  • Anaesthesia for specialised radiological procedures
  • Central venous catheterization (CVP insertion)
  • Provision and monitoring of oxygen and related services; monitoring oxygen consumption
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission and care
  • Pre-operative review and assessment for elective and emergency cases
  • Post-operative pain management and ward-based pain services
  • Training of doctors (from other specialties and institutions) in anaesthesia diploma and fellowship programs
  • Training neonatologists on intubation and mechanical ventilator use
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) services
  • Sedation for paediatric patients on the ward
  • Transfer of critically ill patients (intra- and inter-hospital)

2. Nurse Anaesthetists

  • Spinal anaesthesia
  • General anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgeries

3. Recovery Room

  • Post-anaesthesia recovery and monitoring for surgical patients

4. Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

  • Nursing and critical care for ICU patients (includes routine nursing tasks such as bed bathing)

  • Morning review of previous day calls and the day’s theatre list
  • Daily ICU ward rounds
  • Theatre sessions across specialties (hospital has 8 theatre suites)
  • Pre-operative assessment / review for elective and emergency surgeries
  • Post-anaesthesia recovery and care
