IRRUA SPECIALIST TEACHING HOSPITAL COMMEMORATES WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY 2026

Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), in collaboration with the Matthew Okpebholo Geriatric Care and Research Centre and the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, commemorated the 2026 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), reaffirming its commitment to promoting the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of older persons.

The event, themed “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work, brought together healthcare professionals, community leaders, stakeholders, and members of the public to raise awareness about elder abuse and strengthen efforts toward its prevention.

Representing the Chief Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Olukunle Obagaye, reiterated the hospital’s dedication to advancing geriatric healthcare and protecting older adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Delivering a health talk, the Director of the Matthew Okpebholo Geriatric Care and Research Centre, Dr. Fatelyn Okakah, emphasized the importance of community participation in safeguarding older persons. She called for a collective commitment from families, caregivers, healthcare providers, community leaders, and policymakers to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the elderly.

Activities marking the occasion included church sensitization visits, community awareness campaigns, a radio talk show, educational outreaches, and the provision of free medical services. Participants were enlightened on the various forms of elder abuse and encouraged to report suspected cases to the appropriate authorities.

The commemoration concluded with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to implement practical and sustainable measures aimed at preventing elder abuse and promoting the welfare of older persons.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed annually to highlight the challenges faced by older persons and to encourage actions that protect their rights, dignity, and overall wellbeing.
